Résumé
Pour désigner leur propre communauté linguistique, certains Yorùbá utilisent
l’expression ọmọOdùduwá qui fait allusion à leur ancêtre légendaire tandis que d’autre la
dénomment ọmọẹkáàárò ̣ oòjíire qui se rapporte à leur formule de salutation matinale. Cet
état de chose mérite d’être élucidé. C’est la raison qui justifie l’étude qui a conduit à la
rédaction du présent article. La question du choix préférentiel par des yorùbá eux-mêmes
de l’une des deux expressions sus-citées trouve sa raison d’être dans leur histoire et dans
la tradition Ikedu d’Ilé Ifè. De ces deux sources, il ressort qu’Odùduwá fut le 93è roi d’Ilé
Ifè ̣ d’une part, que des migrations ont été enregistrées avant son prestigieux règne qui a
permis de le considérer comme l’ancêtre des Yorùbá d’autre part. De ces informations,
l’expression ọmọOdùduwá paraîtrait exclusive tandis que celle ọmọẹkáàárò ̣ oòjíire serait
inclusive bien que chacun des locuteurs qui utilisent l’une ou l’autre desdites expressions
désigne, selon son entendement, la seule et même communauté ethnosociolinguistique
yorùbá. Cet article a fondamentalement pour but de démontrer la corrélation qui existe
entre l’histoire du peuple yorùbá et la tradition Ikedud’Ilé Ifè ̣ avec le sentiment des
locuteurs de la langue yorùbá par rapport à leur appartenance à leur communauté
ethnosociolinguistique et surtout par rapport à la dénomination de ladite communauté.

Abstract
To describe their own linguistic community, some Yorùbá use the expression ọ m ọ Odùduwá which alludes to their legendary ancestor while others call it ọ m ọ ẹ káàárò ̣ oòjíire which refers to their morning greeting formula. This state of affairs
deserves to be elucidated. This is the rationale for the study that led to the writing of this
article. The question of the preferential choice by yorùbá themselves of one of the two
above-mentioned expressions finds its reason of being in their history and in the Ikedu
tradition of Ilé Ifè. From these two sources it appears that Odùduwá was the 93rd king of
Ilé If ẹ on the one hand, that migrations were recorded before his prestigious reign which
allowed him to be considered as the ancestor of Yorùbá on the other hand. From this
information, the expression ọ m ọ Odùduwá would appear exclusive while that ọ m ọ ẹ káàárò ̣ oòjíire would be inclusive, although each of the speakers who use one or the
other of these expressions refers, according to his understanding, to the one and the same
Yorùbá ethnosociolinguistic community. The purpose of this article is basically to
demonstrate the correlation between the history of the Yoruba people and the Ikedu
tradition of Ilé If ẹ with the feeling of the speakers of the Yorùbá language in relation to
their belonging to their ethnosociolinguistic community and especially in relation to the
denomination of the said community.
